In the University of Manchester, two research scholarships were established in Chemistry, one by Messrs Levinstein Ltd and the other by Messrs Simon-Carves Ltd, each with an annual value of £100. The University noted:These Research Scholarships are to be welcomed as providing a new link between the University and Industry: the scholars will, for a year at least, have the advantage of training in research methods under the guidance of a University Professor, and will yet know that their work is directed to the problems that concern the firm which endows and intends to employ them. It is much to be hoped that other firms will follow the example now set, and that other Research Scholarships will be founded in the Department of Chemistry and in other Departments 8
